Fatal Affair (2020)

Fatal Affair is the kind of slick, late-night thriller that knows exactly what it’s doing: it grabs you with a familiar setup, then tightens the screws with a steady drumbeat of paranoia and escalating danger. Nia Long brings grounded intelligence and emotional pull to Ellie, while Omar Epps gives the “old friend” a charm that curdles into something far more unsettling, and together they keep the movie humming even when it leans into pulpy genre turns. Director Peter Sullivan keeps the pacing brisk and the vibe glossy and tense, making it easy to hit play “for a minute” and realize you’ve stayed for the whole ride. It’s not for viewers hunting a deeply original psychological study, but if you want a watchable, star-powered cat-and-mouse story that delivers clean, crowd-pleasing suspense, this one earns its spot in your queue.

Fatal Affair is aiming for a slick, modern “one bad decision turns into a nightmare” thriller, and on paper the setup has all the right ingredients: a stressed marriage, an old flame, and a stalker spiraling out of control. The problem is it plays almost entirely on autopilot, hitting familiar beats with little suspense, thin writing, and a villain who feels more like a checklist than a genuinely unnerving presence. If you need sharp twists, escalating tension, or characters making convincingly smart choices, this will probably test your patience. Still, Nia Long and Omar Epps have watchable chemistry and it moves fast enough to work as low-stakes background thriller viewing if your expectations are modest.
