Little Ashes (2008)
About the young life and loves of artist Salvador Dalí, filmmaker Luis Buñuel and writer Federico García Lorca.
What people think about Little Ashes
Little Ashes is special for the way it treats genius not as a museum label, but as a volatile, living thing—young Dalí, Lorca, and Buñuel colliding in a Madrid where art and desire feel equally dangerous. Paul Morrison leans into a gauzy, tactile mood, letting the film’s visual texture and period atmosphere do as much storytelling as the dialogue, while the performances (especially Javier Beltrán’s soulful Lorca and Robert Pattinson’s nervy, watchful Dalí) keep the emotions raw and immediate. It’s an earnest, ambitious biography that plays more like a romantic fever dream than a tidy history lesson, capturing the ache of intimacy and ambition pulling people in different directions. Fair warning: the film is explicit and occasionally shocking, and its dreamy approach may frustrate viewers who want cleaner facts—but if you’re drawn to art, longing, and the messy birth of modernism, it’s hard to shake.
Little Ashes wants to be a steamy, tragic coming-of-age portrait of Dalí, Lorca, and Buñuel as young artists colliding in Madrid, with desire and ambition pulling them apart. The problem is it often plays like a prestige biopic on paper but a flimsy melodrama on screen: the tone swings from earnest to oddly camp, the script leans on stiff “important” dialogue, and the story struggles to build real momentum or emotional punch. There are flashes of atmosphere and an intriguing premise if you’re curious about this circle and don’t mind some uneven acting, but don’t go in expecting a sharp, psychologically rich character study. Also, the film is very explicit and includes disturbing violence and imagery, so if you’re not up for heavy content on top of a wobbly execution, this one will test your patience.
