Old (2021)

Old is the kind of high-concept thriller that feels like a campfire story told with a straight face: simple, audacious, and instantly unsettling. M. Night Shyamalan turns a postcard-perfect beach into a pressure cooker where time becomes the monster, and the movie’s tension comes not from jump scares so much as the creeping, bodily panic of watching life accelerate out of anyone’s control. It’s pulpy, weird, and occasionally darkly funny in the way only Shyamalan can manage, with committed performances grounding the absurdity just enough to keep you leaning in. Old is clearly trying to turn a brilliant high-concept idea into a pressure-cooker thriller about mortality, parenting, and time slipping away, and the setup is genuinely gripping. The problem is that Shyamalan’s execution leans hard on stiff, unnatural dialogue and characters who often speak like they’re explaining the movie to you rather than living in it. If you’re someone who needs airtight logic and subtle storytelling, the plot contrivances and the very talky, explanation-forward wrap-up may feel like the film talking itself out of its own mystery. Still, the pacing stays tense, the central concept is unsettling in the best way, and if you can tolerate some clunkiness for a nasty, memorable premise, there’s enough dread here to make it worth a look.
