Titane (2021)

Titane is the rare film that feels like it’s inventing its own language as it goes—part body-horror fever dream, part bruised melodrama, and somehow, against all odds, a strangely tender story about loneliness and the hunger to be accepted. Julia Ducournau directs with fearless imagination, staging shock and beauty in the same breath, while Agathe Rousselle is mesmerizingly unreadable and Vincent Lindon brings a raw, aching humanity that anchors the madness. The vibe is sweaty, neon-lit, and confrontational, with images that stick to your brain long after the credits, not because they’re outrageous, but because they’re charged with feeling. It’s absolutely not for the squeamish or anyone allergic to transgressive cinema, but if you want something genuinely original that dares you to keep up—and rewards you when you do—this is the one.

Titane is trying to be a feverish, body-horror fairy tale about identity, grief, and the desperate need to be loved, wrapped in Ducournau’s confrontational style. The problem is it’s so committed to shock and grotesque provocation that a lot of viewers will find it labored, emotionally remote, and more confusing than compelling, with imagery that can feel crudely handled rather than meaningfully transgressive. It’s also easy to see why some people read parts of it as misogynistic or transphobic-adjacent, depending on how you interpret its use of gender performance and violence. If you want a coherent thriller or characters you can actually connect with, skip it; if you can handle extreme sex/violence and you’re open to an abrasive, symbolic nightmare that occasionally lands on something tender, you might find it weirdly affecting.
