Paul (2011)

Paul is a loving, laugh-out-loud road movie that treats sci-fi fandom not as a punchline but as a passport to wonder, pairing the effortless buddy chemistry of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost with Seth Rogen’s perfectly timed, foulmouthed alien charm. Greg Mottola keeps the pace breezy and the desert vibe sunbaked and mischievous, layering in affectionate nods to UFO lore and classic genre touchstones without requiring you to be a superfan to enjoy the ride. Beneath the raunch and relentless profanity, there’s a surprisingly sweet heart beating in the story—about friendship, belief, and the small courage it takes to become the person you’ve been pretending you already are. If you’re allergic to crude jokes, it may be too much, but if you can meet it halfway, Paul is the kind of comedy that leaves you grinning like you just found a secret hatch in the universe.

Paul is clearly trying to be a nerdy love letter to sci-fi fandom—a goofy road-trip adventure where the alien is basically a foul-mouthed buddy and the jokes come fast. The problem is it often feels like it’s coasting on references, dick jokes, and “aren’t we clever?” winks rather than delivering consistently sharp comedy or a story with much bite. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are still likable, and there are a few genuinely fun set pieces, but if you’re expecting the tight, inventive spark of their best work, this can feel uneven and a bit self-satisfied. If crude banter, constant swearing, and pop-culture nods are your comfort food, you’ll probably have a decent time; if that stuff wears thin quickly, this one will too.
