Freaky (2020)

Freaky is the rare horror-comedy that actually earns both halves of its hyphen, marrying a classic slasher setup to a body-swap premise that feels slick, clever, and surprisingly character-driven. Christopher Landon keeps the pace snappy and the tone mischievously upbeat, letting the jokes land without defanging the suspense, while the script has real fun poking at high-school and horror conventions. The secret weapon is Vince Vaughn, who turns a potentially one-note gimmick into a full performance—funny, physical, and just unsettling enough—matched by Kathryn Newton’s grounded charm as the story’s emotional anchor. It’s not for the squeamish (the gore and language go hard), but if you like your scares served with a wicked grin, this one’s a crowd-pleaser.

Freaky is clearly aiming to be a crowd-pleasing mashup of slasher carnage and body-swap comedy, basically “Freaky Friday” with a knife, and it mostly knows exactly what lane it’s in. The problem is that the story beats are pretty predictable, the pacing can wobble between jokes and kills, and some of the side drama feels like filler rather than fuel. That said, Vince Vaughn commits hard to the role, the concept delivers a few genuinely fun reversals, and the gore is punchy if you like your horror loud and messy.
