What people think about The Longshots
What makes The Longshots special isn’t the underdog football premise so much as the easy, lived-in warmth it finds in a struggling town and a kid who refuses to be defined by anyone else’s expectations. Ice Cube brings a surprisingly gentle, grounded presence as a man trying to reclaim his own sense of worth, while Keke Palmer is pure spark—funny, tough, and instantly lovable in a way that makes you root for her before the first big play is even drawn up. The movie’s vibe is crowd-pleasing and heartfelt, with enough humor to keep it light and enough sincerity to make its small victories feel earned, even when you can see the sports-movie beats coming. If you’re allergic to familiar inspirational formulas, it may not convert you, but if you want a family-friendly, true-story uplift with real charm and a big heart, it’s an easy recommend.
The Longshots is clearly aiming to be a feel-good, underdog sports story with a “believe in yourself” message, and it does have a genuinely likable center thanks to Keke Palmer’s charm and Ice Cube’s steady presence. The problem is it plays like a checklist of familiar sports-movie beats—doubters, big speeches, swelling music cues—so you can often see the next “inspirational” moment coming a mile away. If you’re hoping for a sharper, more surprising take on a real trailblazer, this can feel overly calculated and a bit bland. But if you just want a clean-ish, family-friendly crowd-pleaser that coasts on heart and easy wins, it’ll do the job.
