The Wackness (2008)

The Wackness captures that sticky, sunbaked New York summer feeling with a rare mix of swagger and vulnerability, turning a familiar coming-of-age setup into something surprisingly heartfelt. Jonathan Levine keeps the vibe buoyant and funny without dodging the bruises underneath, and Josh Peck is terrific as a kid trying to act older than he is while quietly falling apart. Ben Kingsley, playing against type, brings sharp comic bite and real sadness to the film’s oddball therapy bond, giving the story an off-kilter warmth that sneaks up on you. It’s definitely not for viewers who want a squeaky-clean teen romance—sex, weed, and messy emotions are the air it breathes—but if you like character-driven dramedies with charm, energy, and an honest pulse, this one earns its glow.

The Wackness is aiming for a sweaty, ’90s NYC coming-of-age vibe—part stoner comedy, part melancholy romance—with a real attempt at emotional honesty beneath the weed smoke and mixtape nostalgia. The problem is it often leans on familiar “troubled teen learns life lessons” beats, and the tone can wobble between heartfelt and sitcom-broad, so the bigger moments don’t always land with the sting it’s clearly reaching for. Josh Peck is likable and Ben Kingsley brings welcome oddball energy, plus the soundtrack and city atmosphere do a lot of heavy lifting, but the story can feel a bit too safe and conveniently plotted. If you’re allergic to heavy drug use on-screen, or you want a sharper, less cliché teen drama with more bite, this may feel like a pleasant time capsule rather than a must-watch.
