The Belko Experiment (2017)

What makes The Belko Experiment pop is how it turns the most familiar setting in modern life—the office—into a pressure cooker where corporate small talk curdles into pure survival instinct, and it does it with a wicked, darkly comic grin. Greg McLean keeps the pace mean and efficient, letting the premise escalate with a nasty sense of play while the film’s satire of workplace hierarchy and “team-building” cruelty lands harder than you expect. John Gallagher Jr. gives the chaos an anxious, human center, while Tony Goldwyn brings a chilling plausibility to the kind of authority that sounds reasonable right up until it’s monstrous. It’s unapologetically bloody and gleefully disturbing, so if you’re squeamish or hoping for subtle horror, this isn’t your ride—but if you want a sharp, nasty, crowd-pleasing thriller that knows exactly how disreputable it is, it’s a blast.

The Belko Experiment is clearly aiming for a nasty little corporate satire wrapped in a high-concept “office battle royale,” and for a while that setup is genuinely tense and darkly amusing. The problem is that once the bloodletting starts, the movie leans hard on brutality as its main engine, while the characters stay too thin for the moral choices to really land. If you’re hoping for sharp social commentary or clever twists, you may find it more mean and repetitive than insightful, with violence that can feel more punishing than thrilling. Still, if you just want a fast, claustrophobic pressure-cooker thriller with a few strong performances and no interest in subtlety, it delivers exactly that.
