Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian (2009)
Hapless museum night watchman Larry Daley must help his living, breathing exhibit friends out of a pickle now that they've been transferred to the archives at the Smithsonian Institution. Larry's (mis)adventures this time include close encounters with Amelia Earhart, Abe Lincoln and Ivan the Terrible.
What people think about Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian
Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian takes the first film’s irresistible “history comes alive” hook and scales it up into a bigger, breezier playground, turning the Smithsonian into a candy store of sight gags, chases, and genuinely imaginative set pieces. Ben Stiller’s everyman sincerity keeps the chaos grounded, while Amy Adams practically steals the movie with a sparkling, swaggering Amelia Earhart who brings real warmth to the whimsy. The film’s effects and pacing have that Saturday-matinee snap—colorful, kinetic, and packed with playful cameos that feel like flipping through a living storybook. It’s not aiming for subtle comedy or deep drama, and a few spooky moments might startle very young kids, but if you want a high-spirited, family-friendly adventure that’s easy to like, this one delivers.
Battle of the Smithsonian is clearly trying to be a bigger, louder sequel that turns the “museum comes alive” gimmick into a full-on historical theme-park ride, and on that level it mostly delivers. The problem is it’s so crammed with characters, effects, and mini-set-pieces that the story can feel scattershot, with a slow-ish windup and a plot you’ll see coming from miles away. If you’re hoping for the tighter charm of the first film or a coherent adventure with real momentum, this one may feel like noise dressed up as spectacle. Still, Ben Stiller’s likable exasperation and Amy Adams’ energetic Amelia Earhart add some spark, and younger viewers who just want goofy action and famous figures popping in will probably have a good time.
