What people think about Jonah Hex
Jonah Hex is the kind of lean, mean oddball Western that doesn’t politely ask for your attention—it kicks the saloon doors open with pulp energy, supernatural grit, and a pace that barely lets you breathe. Josh Brolin plays Hex like a man carved out of scar tissue and stubbornness, while John Malkovich turns the villainy up to operatic levels, making the whole thing feel like a grim comic-book fever dream splashed across frontier dust. The pleasure here is in its unapologetic strangeness: part revenge tale, part occult-tinged action sprint, with just enough offbeat style to keep you guessing what insane image comes next. It’s not for viewers who want a grounded, historically minded Western, but if you’re in the mood for something fast, violent, and cheerfully unclassifiable, it’s a surprisingly entertaining ride.
Jonah Hex wants to be a pulpy, supernatural-tinged Western revenge tale with comic-book swagger, and you can feel the intention to mash up gritty frontier violence with weird occult flavor. The problem is it plays like a highlight reel missing the connective tissue: scenes arrive, explode, and move on so fast that characters and stakes barely get a chance to land, and the editing makes the story feel oddly chopped up. Josh Brolin brings real scowl-and-steel commitment and Malkovich clearly enjoys being theatrical, but neither can fix how unfocused and rushed the whole thing feels. If you’re after a coherent Western thriller with satisfying build and payoff, this will likely frustrate you; if you just want a short, loud, messy genre cocktail and don’t mind style over sense, you might get some guilty-pleasure fun out of it.
