Nothing But the Truth (2008)

Nothing But the Truth is the kind of grown-up political thriller Hollywood doesn’t make often anymore: tense, talky in the best way, and powered by a moral dilemma that keeps tightening like a vise. Rod Lurie stages the story with the snap of a newsroom drama and the chill of a national-security chess match, letting courtroom sparring and quiet personal fallout generate as much suspense as any chase scene. Kate Beckinsale is terrific as a reporter whose stubbornness reads less like heroics than a costly, human conviction, while Matt Dillon and Angela Bassett bring gravitas and bite to a battle where nobody gets to stay purely righteous. If you want fireworks and easy answers, this isn’t that movie—but if you’re on the fence and crave an intelligent, propulsive drama that leaves you arguing with yourself on the drive home, it’s absolutely worth your time.

Nothing But the Truth clearly wants to be a ripped-from-the-headlines moral thriller about press freedom versus national security, and it has a solid hook with Kate Beckinsale committed to a principled, self-destructive stand. The problem is that it often plays like an overcooked TV courtroom drama: lots of speeches, heavy-handed “big issue” dialogue, and plot beats that can feel more convenient than convincing. If you’re hoping for a nuanced, investigative slow-burn or a sharply realistic political film, you may find it shallow, occasionally confusing, and emotionally pushy rather than persuasive. Still, the cast brings real intensity and the central dilemma is engaging enough that, if you like high-stakes legal melodrama and don’t mind some soapiness, it can work as a tense watch.
