Comali (2019)

Comali has a wonderfully high-concept hook—a man waking up after 16 years in a coma—and it uses it not just for laughs, but to gently skewer how much the world (and we) have handed our humanity over to screens. The vibe is breezy and nostalgic, especially if you’re a 90s kid, with Jayam Ravi’s wide-eyed sincerity and the film’s comic energy making the culture shock feel both funny and oddly moving. Beneath the crowd-pleasing gags, it keeps circling back to a warm, earnest idea: decency still matters, even when everything is louder, faster, and online. It’s not for everyone if you’re allergic to message-driven commercial cinema or some broad humor, but if you want a feel-good comedy-drama with heart and a timely bite, this one lands.

Comali is clearly trying to be a crowd-pleasing mix of fish-out-of-water comedy and a sentimental wake-up call about how society has changed, with a likable lead stumbling through modern life after a long coma. The problem is the film can’t decide what it wants to be, bouncing from broad jokes to sudden moral lectures and melodrama, and some key turns rely on pretty illogical, convenience-driven writing. A few scenes are genuinely funny and the emotional beats land when it keeps things simple, but the second half gets messy and preachy enough to test your patience. If you want a tight, coherent dramedy, this may disappoint; if you’re okay with tonal whiplash for the sake of some laughs and a social-message payoff, you’ll probably find it watchable.
