Stillwater (2021)

Stillwater is special because it takes a familiar “clear my loved one’s name” premise and turns it into something richer: a quietly gripping portrait of a man trying to earn his way back into his daughter’s life while navigating a city and a culture that don’t bend to his will. Tom McCarthy lets the thriller elements simmer rather than shout, and in that space Matt Damon delivers one of his most lived-in performances—stubborn, tender, and painfully human—while Marseille itself feels sunlit and bruised at the same time. The film’s great surprise is its warmth, as an unexpected connection begins to soften the story’s hard edges without ever turning sentimental. It’s a deliberate, mood-forward drama with crime in its bloodstream, so if you want nonstop twists you may find it slow, but if you’re open to emotional complexity and moral messiness, it’s deeply worth the trip.

Stillwater wants to be two movies at once: a grounded, character-driven father–daughter drama about guilt and redemption, and a tense, boots-on-the-ground investigation in a foreign city. When it works, Matt Damon gives the roughneck dad a bruised sincerity, and the Marseille setting plus the quieter domestic moments have a lived-in warmth that’s easy to sink into. But it’s long, often sluggish, and the tonal gear shifts can feel clunky—like the film keeps changing its mind about whether it’s a thriller or a slow-burn human story, which can make the payoff feel thinner than the runtime suggests. If you’re expecting a tight crime thriller or a sharply argued true-crime-style statement, this may test your patience; if you’re okay with a meandering, melancholy drama that occasionally borrows thriller beats, you’ll get more out of it.
