Departures (2008)
Daigo, a cellist, is laid off from his orchestra and moves with his wife back to his small hometown where the living is cheaper. Thinking he’s applying for a job at a travel agency he finds he’s being interviewed for work with departures of a more permanent nature – as an undertaker’s assistant.
What people think about Departures
Departures is one of those rare dramas that looks straight at death and somehow leaves you feeling more alive, turning an unlikely job into a quietly riveting meditation on dignity, love, and second chances. Yojiro Takita films the encoffinment rituals with an elegance that’s never showy, letting small gestures and patient observation do the heavy lifting, while Masahiro Motoki gives Daigo a tender, human awkwardness that blooms into real grace. The tone is gently warm and often unexpectedly funny, balancing sorrow with the kind of everyday humor that makes the emotions hit harder when they arrive. It won’t be for everyone if you’re squeamish about bodies or prefer your catharsis loud and dramatic, but if you can meet it on its calm, compassionate wavelength, it’s profoundly affecting and quietly unforgettable.
Departures is clearly aiming for a gentle, humanistic meditation on death, dignity, and the quiet pride of unglamorous work, and it often succeeds on a moment-to-moment level thanks to careful performances and a respectful tone. The catch is that the story is pretty telegraphed, and the film leans hard into heartfelt beats that can feel a bit pre-packaged if you prefer subtlety over sentiment. It’s also unhurried to the point where “patient” can start to feel like “slow,” especially if you’re waiting for sharper conflict or surprises. If you’re open to a tender, ritual-focused drama with some corpse-preparation imagery and an emotionally obvious arc, it can land beautifully; if you want nuance, edge, or unpredictability, this may leave you cold.
