It’s an original kind of horror, the sort that creeps under your skin through atmosphere and patience, building tension with crisp, unshowy cinematography and a committed central performance that makes every bad decision feel heartbreakingly understandable. When the film turns visceral, it earns it, using its shocks to sharpen themes about desperation, survival, and the costs we rationalize when we’re cornered. If you want jump-scare fireworks, this may feel too slow-burn and unsettling, but if you like smart, skin-crawling horror that lingers after the credits, it’s a bracing treat.

The Swarm is clearly aiming for a grounded, character-driven horror-drama about desperation, motherhood, and a small business turning into something monstrous. The problem is it often moves at a crawl, stretching tension so thin that the payoff can feel predictable and, for some, disappointingly muted. If you’re coming for a punchy creature-feature or nonstop shocks, you may find it boring and not quite what it’s sold as, with leaps in believability that make the premise feel better on paper than on screen. Still, if you have patience for slow-burn European mood pieces and you’re intrigued by the unsettling idea of nature and necessity colliding, there are moments that work even when the execution doesn’t fully deliver.
