Halloween Kills (2021)

Halloween Kills is a loud, vicious shot of pure slasher adrenaline, made special by how it turns Haddonfield itself into the main character—an entire town vibrating with fear, anger, and the terrible idea that violence can be cured with more violence. David Gordon Green stages the mayhem with craft and confidence: the kills are brutally inventive, the practical effects are stomach-turningly convincing, and John Carpenter’s pulsing score drives everything forward like a heartbeat you can’t slow down. Jamie Lee Curtis brings a battered, steely gravity even when she’s sidelined, while the film’s roaming, night-long energy gives it the feel of a grim Halloween parade barreling toward disaster. If you want a thoughtful, restrained horror film, this isn’t it—but if you’re on the fence and craving a mean, gory, crowd-pleasing chapter that deepens the franchise’s mythology while delivering exactly what the title promises, it’s hard to resist.

Halloween Kills is clearly trying to be a loud, angry middle chapter about a town snapping under trauma, with Michael Myers as a force of nature and the body count dialed to absurd levels. The problem is it often mistakes noise for momentum: the story splinters into too many characters and side threads, the pacing lurches, and the “mob mentality” commentary is hammered so hard it can feel more like a lecture than a thriller. If you’re coming for suspense, clever set-pieces, or meaningful progression for Laurie and her family, you may find it dramatically thin and repetitive despite the nonstop carnage. But if what you want is slick, brutal slasher mayhem with a few standout kills and the Halloween atmosphere turned up, it does deliver that—just don’t expect it to be satisfying on a story level.
