#Alive (2020)

#Alive takes the zombie apocalypse and makes it feel frighteningly intimate, turning one apartment into a pressure cooker where every notification, every dwindling resource, and every muffled sound in the hallway matters. Yoo Ah-in carries the film with a raw, lived-in performance that captures panic, boredom, and stubborn hope, while Park Shin-hye brings a welcome jolt of competence and warmth that keeps the story from sinking into despair. Director Cho Il keeps the pacing tight and the tension tactile, but slips in small, human flashes of humor that feel earned—like a nervous laugh you didn’t know you needed. It’s also a surprisingly timely thriller about isolation and staying connected when the world goes dark, though if you’re allergic to jump scares and moderate gore, it may be a stressful night at the movies.

#Alive is clearly aiming for a relatable, modern zombie-survival thriller: one guy trapped in an apartment, watching society collapse through screens, and trying to stay human long enough to be rescued. It’s competently made and often tense, with a strong central performance and a few solid set pieces that make good use of the confined setting. But don’t go in expecting the genre to be reinvented—this sticks closely to familiar zombie beats, and the “surprises” are mostly quick jolts rather than genuinely fresh twists or a deeply satisfying payoff. If you’re already burned out on formulaic outbreak stories, you’ll likely find it predictable; if you just want a brisk, watchable zombie movie with modern tech anxiety and moderate gore, it does the job.
