Mank (2020)

Mank is special because it doesn’t just recreate Old Hollywood—it conjures it like a half-remembered dream, all razor wit, cigarette haze, and moral hangovers, and then uses that atmosphere to ask who really gets to author a masterpiece. David Fincher directs with meticulous, old-school elegance, letting the black-and-white cinematography and mournful, propulsive score do as much storytelling as the dialogue, while Gary Oldman turns Herman J. Mankiewicz into a brilliant mess you can’t look away from. The film’s pleasures are in its texture: the crackle of newsroom-sized egos, the seduction of power, and the quiet ache behind the glamour, with Amanda Seyfried bringing surprising grace and humanity to the world around Mank. It’s not for everyone—if you want a straightforward biopic or aren’t intrigued by the machinery of movies and politics, it may feel talky—but if you like sharp writing and immaculate craft, it’s a feast.

Mank is clearly trying to be a love letter to old Hollywood and a sharp political autopsy of how power, media, and money shaped the era that birthed Citizen Kane. The problem is it often plays more like an impeccably designed lecture than a gripping drama: the pacing is leisurely to the point of drag, the structure can feel scattered, and a lot of the “story” arrives as witty exposition rather than emotional momentum. If you’re not already interested in studio-era history, newspaper barons, and inside-baseball filmmaking talk, this may feel distant and overlong despite David Fincher’s craft. Still, Gary Oldman is reliably watchable, Amanda Seyfried brings real warmth, and the film’s black-and-white style and dialogue have enough bite to satisfy viewers who enjoy prestige filmmaking more than catharsis.
