ICHI (2008)

Ichi (2008) feels like a blade drawn in moonlight: elegant, poised, and quietly thrilling even when it’s standing still. Haruka Ayase gives a performance that’s both tender and steel-strong, making Ichi’s vulnerability and resolve equally believable as the film glides through misty roads, hushed rooms, and sudden bursts of impeccably choreographed action. The visuals are stylish without showing off, and the tone carries a wistful, historical melancholy that deepens the genre pleasures rather than replacing them. If you want nonstop mayhem this may feel too graceful at times, but if you’re on the fence, it’s a beautiful, satisfying spin on the blind swordsman tradition that earns its moments of violence with real feeling.

Ichi clearly wants to be a fresh, female-led riff on the Zatoichi-style wandering swordsman tale, mixing quiet drama with sudden bursts of violence and a search-for-family thread. The problem is it often feels oddly flat: the character work doesn’t pop, the dialogue can land with a thud, and the pacing drifts just when you want the story to tighten its grip. If you’re coming for sharp, inventive swordplay or a charismatic lead who carries every scene, you may find the action a bit basic and the overall personality strangely muted, capped by an ending that doesn’t fully pay off. Still, if you’re in the mood for a restrained, melancholy period piece with a few stylish moments and a simple, earnest journey, it can be an easy watch.
