Set in rural Fukushima, it pairs delicate, painterly animation with a tender coming-of-age romance, letting the characters’ creativity and hesitations speak as loudly as any big dramatic speech. What makes it linger is how it holds warmth and melancholy in the same frame, acknowledging the long shadow of the 2011 disaster without turning the story into misery or melodrama. If you’re craving a loud, twisty plot, this may feel too soft-spoken, but if you want a heartfelt slice-of-life that’s beautifully observed and emotionally honest, it’s an easy film to fall into.
