Painted Skin (2008)
Painted Skin is based on one of Pu Songling's classic short stories in Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio. Zhou Xun stars as Xiao Wei, a fox spirit that feasts on human hearts in order to maintain her lovely, youthful appearance. When General Wang Sheng (Chen Kun) 'rescues' her from a band of bandits and brings her home, trouble brews as the demon falls in love with the general.
What people think about Painted Skin
Painted Skin is the kind of lush, swooning supernatural romance that reminds you how intoxicating fantasy can be when it’s treated with genuine emotion and painterly beauty. Every frame feels brushed with moonlight and menace, balancing elegant action with a tragic, yearning atmosphere that pulls you in even when you sense danger lurking just offscreen. Zhou Xun is mesmerizing as the fox spirit—at once delicate and predatory—while the human characters are given enough heart and dignity to make the drama land instead of just decorating the spectacle. If you’re in the mood for a poetic, old-school tale of love, temptation, and consequence, it’s deeply satisfying; if you prefer your fantasy brisk and irony-heavy, this one is unabashedly romantic and earnest.
Painted Skin (2008) is clearly aiming for a moody, tragic fairy-tale romance with supernatural horror and a moral fable at its core, and when it leans into atmosphere and longing it can be genuinely absorbing. The problem is it often feels like a film caught between styles: the pacing lurches, the story can seem stitched together rather than smoothly built, and the “action” label promises more excitement than you’ll actually get. Some effects and staging now look dated, which can blunt the tension if you’re expecting slick fantasy spectacle, and a few performances land unevenly depending on your tolerance for melodrama. If you’re up for an old-school, romantic ghost story vibe and can forgive rough edges, there’s something here; if you want tight plotting, consistent momentum, or modern polish, this may test your patience.
