The Divine Fury (2019)

The Divine Fury has a pulpy, crowd-pleasing spark: it takes exorcism horror’s dread and fuses it with the clean, kinetic satisfaction of a fighter who knows exactly how to hit back. Jason Kim builds a moody, shadow-soaked atmosphere full of unsettling imagery, then keeps tightening the screws with tension that feels both supernatural and bodily, as if faith and pain share the same nerve. Park Seo-jun sells the bruised swagger and simmering anger of a man dragged into something bigger than his fists, while Ahn Sung-ki adds steadiness and gravity that keeps the film from tipping into pure spectacle. If you’re allergic to demonic horror beats or want your scares more subtle, it may not be your match—but if you’re on the fence, this is the kind of genre hybrid that’s simply fun to surrender to.

The Divine Fury is clearly aiming for a slick mash-up of MMA action and Catholic-flavored supernatural horror, with a wounded, angry hero stumbling into a bigger spiritual war. When it’s moving, it has some striking visuals, a solid central performance from Park Seo-jun, and a few satisfyingly punchy confrontations that sell the concept. The problem is it often stops to brood: the backstory and solemn faith-and-evil dialogue can feel heavy, and the plot padding makes the runtime drag when you’re just waiting for the next jolt. If you want fast, scary, propulsive horror or sharp action pacing, this may test your patience—but if you like moody demon-battles with earnest religious themes and style over substance, you’ll probably be fine.
