What people think about Nightbooks
Nightbooks is that rare “gateway horror” that feels genuinely spooky while still keeping one hand on the flashlight for younger viewers, wrapping its chills in a story that’s warmly on the side of imaginative kids. David Yarovesky turns a modern New York apartment into a glittering trapdoor of enchanted objects and shadowy corners, where each new room feels like a page from a twisted storybook. Krysten Ritter is deliciously menacing as the witch, but the film’s beating heart is the chemistry between Winslow Fegley and Lidya Jewett—two smart, scared, resourceful kids whose creativity becomes their courage. It’s not for the very sensitive (the threats are real, the imagery can get intense), but if you want a family-friendly fright with style, atmosphere, and a surprisingly tender respect for “weird” storytellers, this one casts a strong spell.
Nightbooks wants to be a kid-friendly gateway horror: a spooky fairy tale about storytelling, courage, and being “weird” in a good way, wrapped in a modern New York witch-trap. The problem is it often feels like a checklist of familiar fantasy-horror beats, with uneven pacing and a lot of noisy set dressing that looks cooler than it plays, so the scares land more “creepy theme-park” than genuinely tense. If you’re hoping for sharp writing, memorable stories-within-the-story, or a lean plot that builds dread, you may find it overstuffed and predictable. Still, Krysten Ritter commits to the villainy and the production design is imaginative, so it can work fine for families who want spooky visuals without going too dark.
