What makes Up special is how it launches like a buoyant adventure while quietly carrying the weight of a whole life—then somehow makes that weight feel like a gift. Pete Docter and Pixar craft a world of dazzling color and sky-high imagination, but the real spectacle is the tender, funny bond between a gruff widower (Ed Asner, perfect) and an irrepressible kid who won’t take “go away” for an answer. It’s heartfelt without being syrupy, genuinely hilarious in its oddball details, and emotionally precise in the way it earns your feelings rather than demanding them. If you’re allergic to sentiment, it may hit a little close to home—but if you want a film that makes you laugh, ache, and feel newly alive, this one soars.

Up is aiming for a heartfelt adventure about late-life second chances, pairing big, imaginative set pieces with a simple, emotional message that’s easy for families to connect with. The catch is that after its famously powerful opening, the story settles into a more straightforward, sometimes episodic journey that doesn’t always have the layered narrative complexity of Pixar’s very best. If you’re expecting Ratatouille-level thematic depth or a tightly intricate plot, you may feel a slight dip as it leans more on charm, sentiment, and broad adventure beats. Still, the voice work is excellent, the humor lands, and when it wants to hit you in the feelings, it absolutely can—just don’t go in expecting every section to match that opening’s brilliance.
