What really sells it is the emphasis on sisterhood: the movie’s most satisfying moments come not from elaborate carnage, but from watching these women refuse to be isolated or diminished. It’s not for viewers looking for a purely traditional, mystery-first slasher (or anyone sensitive to themes involving sexual assault), but if you want a horror film with teeth, anger, and a crowd-pleasing streak of solidarity, it’s an easy recommendation for a chilly December night.

Black Christmas (2019) is clearly trying to be a modern, anger-fueled slasher that tackles campus misogyny and trauma head-on, and it deserves credit for centering its women as fighters rather than victims. The problem is it often swaps creeping suspense for blunt messaging, so the tension and holiday dread you’d want from this title never really settles in. The plot takes a hard turn into conspiracy/supernatural territory that can feel rushed and oddly ordinary at the same time, like it’s sprinting through ideas instead of letting any of them land. If you’re coming for a moody, atmospheric whodunit slasher, you may leave annoyed; if you want a brisk, PG-13 crowd-pleaser with a clear-cut “fight back” vibe and some punchy moments, it might do the job.
