Last Chance Harvey (2008)
In London for his daughter's wedding, a struggling jingle-writer, Harvey Shine, misses his plane to New York, and thus loses his job. While drowning his sorrows in the airport pub, Harvey meets Kate, a British government worker stuck in an endless cycle of work, phone calls from her mother, and blind dates. A connection forms between the unhappy pair, who soon find themselves falling in love.
What people think about Last Chance Harvey
Last Chance Harvey is a small, humane romance that feels like a deep breath: two smart, bruised adults stumbling into the possibility of happiness when life has already taught them to expect less. Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson make the connection feel earned rather than scripted, trading wit and vulnerability with the kind of chemistry that sneaks up on you, then lingers. The London backdrop and the film’s gentle, observant tone give it warmth without sugarcoating the awkwardness of regret, family disappointments, and starting over. If you’re looking for grand melodrama or youthful fireworks, this isn’t that kind of movie—but if you want something charming, grown-up, and quietly moving, it’s a lovely bet.
Last Chance Harvey is aiming for a gentle, grown-up romance about two lonely people stumbling into a second chance, and it largely banks on the warmth of Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson to sell that idea. If you need sharp writing, surprising turns, or a romance that feels earned through believable complications, the plot here can come off thin, conveniently arranged, and pretty easy to predict. The direction is straightforward to the point of looking a bit pedestrian, and the film leans into sentiment in a way that may feel cozy to some and syrupy to others. Still, if you’re in the mood for a soft, actor-driven comfort watch with a few heartfelt moments rather than a fresh take on the genre, it does deliver that.
