Year One (2009)
When a couple of lazy hunter-gatherers are banished from their primitive village, they set off on an epic journey through the ancient world.
What people think about Year One
Year One is the kind of goofy, big-swing comedy that feels like a road trip through a storybook version of the ancient world, powered less by plot mechanics than by the warm, odd-couple chemistry of Jack Black and Michael Cera. Harold Ramis keeps the vibe light and shaggy, letting the jokes come from modern comic timing dropped into old-timey settings, and when it works, it’s pleasantly, almost disarmingly silly. Black’s bluster and Cera’s anxious sweetness play off each other like mismatched flint and tinder, turning each new encounter into an excuse for playful banter and escalating absurdity. It’s not for everyone—if crude, PG-13 raunch and broad humor aren’t your thing, you’ll bounce off it—but if you’re in the mood for a harmless, mildly adventurous comedy with a likable duo at its center, it’s an easy watch.
Year One is clearly aiming for a goofy, anachronistic caveman road-trip that riffs on Bible stories and ancient history with big, dumb energy. The problem is the jokes often lean hard on crude, sexual, and toilet humor without the sharp writing to make it feel clever, so a lot of scenes play more like loose improv than actual punchlines. Jack Black and Michael Cera have a few charming moments and the premise could’ve been a fun sandbox, but the execution is sloppy and repetitive, with long stretches that feel like filler between the better bits. If you like broad, PG-13 raunch and don’t mind a plot that wanders, you might get a few laughs; if you’re hoping for Harold Ramis-level wit or a tight adventure-comedy, this will likely test your patience.
