Outside the Wire (2021)
In the near future, a drone pilot is sent into a deadly militarized zone and must work with an android officer to locate a doomsday device.
What people think about Outside the Wire
Outside the Wire is the kind of near-future action thriller that hooks you with a smart, uneasy premise—war fought by screens and switches—and then keeps tightening the screws as it drops you into a battered, militarized no-man’s-land. Anthony Mackie is the secret weapon here, playing Captain Leo with a cool, charismatic edge that makes every conversation feel like it might turn into either a joke or a threat, and the film leans into that tension without bogging down in techno-babble. Director Mikael Håfström delivers clean, punchy set pieces and a brisk momentum, while Damson Idris gives the story a human center as a soldier trying to figure out what “doing the right thing” even means in a system built on remote-control violence. It’s not a deep, prestige sci-fi meditation, and the R-rated combat is blunt and frequent, but if you want a slick, propulsive genre ride with a strong central performance and a timely concept, it’s an easy watch to recommend.
Outside the Wire clearly wants to be a slick near-future war thriller with something to say about drones, accountability, and the ethics of “clean” combat, and on paper that’s a solid hook. In practice, the film leans hard on familiar twists and mission-to-mission plotting, so the big ideas feel more like window dressing than something it’s willing to dig into, and the characters often play as functions of the story rather than people you’ll actually care about. The action is competent and Anthony Mackie brings enough charisma to keep scenes moving, but the pacing can feel oddly uneven and the logic occasionally asks you to just go with it. If you’re hoping for smart sci-fi tension or a morally thorny military drama, this may leave you cold; if you just want a disposable, violent, near-future shoot-and-run with a robot-soldier gimmick, it’ll do the job.
