The Nowhere Inn (2021)

The Nowhere Inn is special because it turns the familiar “behind the music” documentary into a sly hall of mirrors, using St. Vincent’s razor-sharp persona as both subject and weapon. It’s intelligent and genuinely funny, but the laughs come with a creeping, delicious unease as the film keeps nudging you to question what’s real, what’s performed, and why we crave “authenticity” from artists in the first place. The vibe is playful, satirical, and increasingly bizarre in a way that feels like a pop-art prank with teeth, anchored by committed performances that sell every left turn. If you want a conventional music doc, this isn’t it—but if you’re up for something unique that pokes at celebrity culture while entertaining you the whole time, it’s a terrific ride.

The Nowhere Inn is clearly trying to poke at celebrity image-making and the slippery idea of “authenticity,” using St. Vincent’s persona as a playground for a meta, reality-bending riff. The problem is it often feels more pleased with its own cleverness than interested in telling a story you can actually follow or care about, so the satire can land as thin and the momentum as frustratingly aimless. If you’re not already invested in St. Vincent or you need a solid narrative spine, this can come off like a self-indulgent art experiment that mistakes weirdness for depth. That said, there are flashes of sharp humor and an intriguing mood, and fans of off-kilter, intentionally baffling anti-documentaries may enjoy the ride more than everyone else.
