Awake (2021)

Awake takes a familiar end-of-the-world setup and gives it a genuinely unnerving hook: not monsters or meteors, but the slow, inevitable unraveling that comes when nobody on Earth can sleep and even the machines go dark. Mark Raso leans into a jittery, dread-soaked vibe where paranoia spreads as fast as exhaustion, and Gina Rodriguez grounds the chaos with a tough, human performance that makes the desperation feel earned rather than sensational. The film’s best scenes crackle with tension—streets turning strange, crowds turning volatile, time running out in a way you can almost feel behind your eyes. It’s not for everyone if you want pristine sci-fi logic or a gentler ride, but if you’re in the mood for a lean, anxious thriller with a clever premise and real momentum, it’s an easy recommendation.

Awake is clearly aiming for a high-concept, end-of-the-world panic thriller with a parental-protection core, and Gina Rodriguez brings enough grit to make Jill feel like a person rather than a plot device. The problem is the film doesn’t dig into its terrific premise so much as jog through familiar chaos beats, with pacing that turns plodding and tension that never really tightens the screws. As it goes on, it starts to feel repetitive and oddly low-stakes for something this apocalyptic, with a payoff that’s more “that’s it?” than satisfying. If you like disaster setups and can coast on atmosphere and a committed lead performance, you might be fine; if you need smart escalation, fresh ideas, and a strong third act, this probably isn’t your night.
