The Proposal (2009)
When she learns she's in danger of losing her visa status and being deported, overbearing book editor Margaret Tate forces her put-upon assistant, Andrew Paxton, to marry her.
What people think about The Proposal
The Proposal is one of those rare rom-coms that feels like it’s running on pure star power and impeccable timing, with Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds sparring so effortlessly you can practically hear the dialogue snap and crackle. Director Anne Fletcher keeps the pace brisk and the tone bright, letting the premise stay delightfully ridiculous while the emotions sneak in through the side door, helped along by a scene-stealing supporting cast (Betty White, in particular, is a gift). It’s funny in a big, crowd-pleasing way but also surprisingly warm, finding real tenderness beneath the posturing without ever turning syrupy. If you don’t enjoy high-concept romantic comedies or cringe at a little PG-13 raunch, it may not convert you—but if you want charm, laughs, and two leads with undeniable chemistry, this one earns its reputation.
The Proposal is trying to be a glossy, old-school rom-com where a ridiculous setup forces two opposites into close quarters until feelings catch up, and in that lane it mostly delivers. The problem is the premise is so contrived and the plot beats so familiar you can practically predict the next “misunderstanding” before it happens, which makes the romance feel more like a checklist than a spark. If you’re allergic to workplace power-imbalance played for laughs, broad sitcom-style humiliation, or PG-13 raunch and innuendo, this will test your patience. Still, Sandra Bullock commits hard, Ryan Reynolds is reliably charming, and the Alaska setting plus a few side characters give it enough energy that rom-com comfort-watchers may not mind the formula.
