[REC] is the rare found-footage horror film that feels less like a gimmick and more like a trap snapping shut around you—once the apartment building seals, the movie’s grip only tightens. Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza shoot with stripped-down urgency, turning flickering hallways, cramped stairwells, and panicked voices into a pressure-cooker of dread that builds with ruthless efficiency. Manuela Velasco’s reporter isn’t a superhero, just a working professional trying to keep up as the night spirals, and that ordinariness makes every scream and split-second decision land harder. It’s relentless, bloody, and intensely claustrophobic—so if you’re allergic to shaky-cam or severe horror, it may be too much—but if you want pure, sustained tension that earns its scares, this is a modern benchmark.

[REC] is trying to be a real-time, on-the-ground nightmare: a news crew trapped in a quarantined apartment block while everything collapses into panic. When it works, it’s brutally effective—claustrophobic, fast, and genuinely scary in a way that feels uncomfortably “caught on tape.” But the trade-off is that the characters are mostly there to scream, run, and react, and the frantic handheld camerawork can feel less immersive and more migraine-inducing if you’re sensitive to shaky footage. If you need a smart, layered mystery or a carefully explained mythology, the late backstory shift may feel like a jolt rather than a payoff, but if you want relentless dread and don’t mind rough edges, this will likely hit hard.
