CODA (2021)
As a CODA (Child of Deaf Adults), Ruby is the only hearing person in her deaf family. When the family's fishing business is threatened, Ruby finds herself torn between pursuing her love of music and her fear of abandoning her parents.
What people think about CODA
CODA is one of those rare crowd-pleasers that earns its tears and laughs the honest way: by letting you fall in love with a family before it asks you to worry about them. Sian Heder finds a beautifully lived-in tone—salt-air New England realism mixed with the lift of a music movie—while Emilia Jones anchors the story with a performance that’s both scrappy and tender, and Troy Kotsur and Marlee Matlin bring humor, heat, and aching humanity to every scene. The film’s greatest magic is its sincerity: it treats deaf culture and sign language not as a lesson, but as the natural rhythm of this household, making Ruby’s pull between loyalty and ambition feel intimate rather than melodramatic. It’s sentimental in the best, old-fashioned way, though if you’re allergic to heartfelt coming-of-age stories (and some frank language and sexual humor), you may find it a bit on-the-nose—but for most viewers, it’s the kind of movie that sends you out of the room feeling lighter.
CODA is clearly aiming for a warm, accessible crowd-pleaser about family duty versus personal dreams, with music as the emotional release valve. It mostly succeeds on heart, thanks to genuinely lived-in performances (especially from Troy Kotsur and Marlee Matlin) and a rare, mainstream spotlight on Deaf culture that feels respectful and human. The catch is that the story beats are extremely familiar—if you’ve seen a dozen “gifted teen chases big audition” dramas, you’ll likely predict every turn and may feel the script nudging you toward tears rather than earning them. If you want something sharper, riskier, or less tidy, this may feel calculated, but if you’re in the mood for sincere, comforting emotion and strong acting, it’s an easy watch.
