I Love You, Beth Cooper (2009)
A valedictorian's declaration of love for a high-school cheerleader launches a night of revelry, reflection and romance for a group of graduating seniors.
What people think about I Love You, Beth Cooper
I Love You, Beth Cooper is a sweet, slightly chaotic graduation-night comedy that understands how one impulsive confession can crack open a whole world of surprises, insecurities, and unexpected tenderness. Chris Columbus keeps the vibe buoyant and fast-moving—more warm-hearted teen odyssey than raunch-fest—letting the jokes land while still giving its characters room to feel like real kids standing on the edge of adulthood. Hayden Panettiere brings an easy charm that plays nicely against Paul Rust’s earnest, awkward sincerity, and the movie’s best trick is how it keeps nudging your expectations about who people are once the spotlight of high school shifts. It’s not the sharpest or most original teen rom-com, and the PG-13 crudity won’t be for everyone, but if you want a genial, watchable night-out movie with a surprisingly soft center, it delivers.
I Love You, Beth Cooper is trying to be a sweet, chaotic “one unforgettable night” teen rom-com about graduation, crushes, and finally saying what you feel. The problem is it leans hard on broad stereotypes and prepackaged hijinks, so a lot of the comedy lands like a checklist of teen-movie clichés rather than anything sharp or surprising. If you’re hoping for real emotional payoff, believable characters, or the warmth you’d expect from a Chris Columbus crowd-pleaser, this can feel oddly hollow and more noisy than funny. That said, it’s breezy, mildly raunchy PG-13 comfort food with a few charming moments, so it may work if you just want an easy, brain-off throwback vibe and don’t mind the shallow writing.
