Dampyr (2022)
In war-torn Balkans, bogus monster hunter Harlan Draka is hired by soldiers who happen to be under attack by an army of actual vampires, uncovering the hidden truth about his past in the process: he is half-human and half-vampire... a Dampyr.
What people think about Dampyr
Dampyr has the rare pulp-movie gift of taking a familiar vampire premise and dropping it into a setting that instantly gives it weight: the war-torn Balkans, where the horrors feel both supernatural and heartbreakingly human. It starts with a scruffy, boozy con man pretending to banish monsters, then gradually tightens its grip as real vampires emerge and the film leans into moody fantasy lore, gritty action, and a surprisingly earnest sense of destiny. Riccardo Chemello keeps the vibe smoky and nocturnal—bullets, blood, and crumbling streets—while Wade Briggs anchors the chaos with a reluctant-hero energy that’s easy to root for, helped along by a strong supporting duo in Stuart Martin and Frida Gustavsson. It won’t convert viewers who want elevated, slow-burn art-horror, but if you’re on the fence and crave a punchy horror-fantasy that finds its footing and keeps getting better as it goes, this one is a satisfying ride.
Dampyr is clearly trying to launch a gritty, war-zone vampire franchise with comic-book swagger, mixing Balkan conflict drama with supernatural action and a “chosen one” origin story. The problem is it often feels like it’s checking genre boxes rather than surprising you, with familiar beats, serviceable dialogue, and action that can look a bit budget-stretched, making it more “late-night schlock” than must-see horror-fantasy. If you want sharp scares, fresh vampire mythology, or truly memorable set pieces, this may leave you cold. But if you’re happy with a straightforward, blood-and-bullets monster hunt and don’t mind a generic vibe in exchange for some moody atmosphere and a likable underdog lead, it can still be an easy watch.
