My First Client grabs you by the collar with a premise that sounds like a thriller, then reveals itself as something rarer: a human drama about conscience, responsibility, and the cost of looking away. Jang Kyu-sung keeps the storytelling grounded and urgent, letting the courtroom mechanics and moral pressure build naturally, while Lee Dong-hwi’s ambitious rookie lawyer slowly becomes someone you can’t help but root for. The real knockout is Choi Myeong-bin, whose performance feels heartbreakingly unperformed—just a child trying to be believed—matched by a cast that never reaches for easy villainy or cheap tears. Fair warning: it’s emotionally heavy and includes scenes of child abuse that are difficult to watch, but if you can handle the intensity, it’s a powerful, compassionate film that stays with you for the right reasons.

My First Client is clearly aiming for an earnest, socially conscious courtroom drama that turns a rookie lawyer’s ambition into a moral wake-up call, and it does have a strong central hook with the child’s shocking claim. The problem is it takes its time getting where you already suspect it’s headed, so the pacing can feel sluggish and the “mystery” elements don’t always land with much surprise. Some supporting characters are sketched rather than fully lived-in, which softens the emotional impact the film is reaching for.
