Randall Wallace keeps the tone rousing and sincere, building toward race sequences that are genuinely thrilling even if you don’t know a furlong from a finish line. If you’re allergic to wholesome, inspirational crowd-pleasers, this may feel traditional—but if you want a heartfelt true story that lifts you up without cynicism, it’s a winner.

Secretariat is aiming to be a crowd-pleasing, old-school underdog story about a woman stepping into a boys’ club and willing a champion into existence, and on that level it absolutely knows how to hit the inspirational beats. The problem is it’s so polished and prepackaged that it can feel like a motivational poster come to life—predictable, occasionally cartoonish in its villains and heroes, and not especially interested in messy nuance or strict historical accuracy. If you want a more complex sports drama or a sharper look at the racing world, this may feel lightweight and a bit too “Disney.” Still, Diane Lane brings grounded warmth, Malkovich adds some bite, and the race sequences deliver enough momentum to make it a solid, family-friendly watch if you’re in the mood for comfort food.
