Death Proof (2007)
Austin's hottest DJ, Jungle Julia, sets out into the night to unwind with her two friends Shanna and Arlene. Covertly tracking their moves is Stuntman Mike, a scarred rebel leering from behind the wheel of his muscle car, revving just feet away.
What people think about Death Proof
Death Proof is Tarantino cutting straight to the bone of movie pleasure: the slow-burn hangout rhythms of a night out, the creeping dread of being watched, and then the sudden, jaw-dropping release of pure stunt-driven mayhem. It’s a grindhouse love letter with a slick sense of craft—dialogue that crackles, tension that coils tighter with every mile of asphalt, and action that feels brutally physical because the cars and bodies really seem to be doing the work. Kurt Russell’s Stuntman Mike is a grinning nightmare behind the wheel, and when the film shifts gears into its female-powered back half, it becomes a shot of adrenaline with Zoë Bell and company turning the road into a battleground. The catch is that it’s proudly nasty, talky, and violently graphic, but if you’re on the fence and you like your thrillers with attitude and your action with real impact, this one earns its bruises.
Death Proof is Tarantino playing love letter to grimy grindhouse car-slasher cinema: lots of attitude, long hangout scenes, then a couple of brutally staged bursts of vehicular violence. The problem is the movie spends so much time on chatty, self-aware banter that if you’re not already enjoying the vibe, the pacing can feel like it’s idling forever waiting for the engine to finally roar. The scratched-up “damaged print” aesthetic and stylized dialogue are very much the point, but they can come off as more cosplay than substance if you’re expecting Tarantino at his sharpest. If you can tolerate a slow burn for an excellent, practical stunt-driven finale (and some nasty crash imagery), it’s a fun curio; if you want a tight thriller with consistent momentum, this one will test your patience.
