Badland (2019)

Badland earns its keep by taking a familiar post–Civil War western setup and giving it a moral pulse: justice isn’t just a matter of who’s fastest on the draw, but who can live with the consequences. Justin Lee keeps the pace brisk and the landscapes dusty and lived-in, while Kevin Makely’s Pinkerton detective carries the story with a steady, haunted resolve that feels earned rather than posed. The real treat is the cast—Bruce Dern brings a weathered gravity, and Mira Sorvino adds steel and surprise, turning what could’ve been a simple stop on the trail into something with real emotional bite. It’s not for viewers who want a gentle, bloodless frontier tale, but if you like your westerns lean, well-crafted, and fueled by character as much as gunpowder, this one hits the target.

Badland is clearly aiming for a gritty, post–Civil War justice western, with a lone Pinkerton tracker trying to balance duty, mercy, and the human cost of revenge. The problem is it often feels like it’s wearing the genre like a costume—very serious, very reverent, and a bit self-important—without the momentum or freshness to make that tone pay off. Expect a B-movie look and pacing that can drag between bursts of competent shootouts, so if you want a punchy, character-rich western, this may test your patience. Still, Bruce Dern and Mira Sorvino bring some gravitas, and if you’re in the mood for a somber, straightforward man-with-a-mission tale, it can scratch that itch.
