Choke (2008)

Choke is the kind of audacious, darkly funny character piece that lives or dies on charisma—and Sam Rockwell has it in spades, turning Victor Mancini into a mess you can’t quite excuse but can’t stop watching. Clark Gregg’s direction keeps the vibe nervy and off-kilter, balancing cringe-comedy and real ache as Victor’s tawdry little hustle collides with the complicated love he has for his mother, played with ferocious, heartbreaking bite by Anjelica Huston. It’s a movie that laughs at self-delusion while quietly insisting that growing up is its own form of pain, and it finds surprising tenderness in the wreckage. Fair warning: the R-rated sexual content and abrasive behavior are front and center, but if you can handle a sharp, provocative dramedy that swings for something human under the grime, it’s a bracing watch.

Choke wants to be a darkly funny, messy character study about addiction, identity, and the weird ways people beg to be loved, and on paper that’s a great fit for Sam Rockwell’s slippery charm. The problem is the film’s tone keeps wobbling between crude comedy, heartfelt drama, and quasi-religious absurdity, so the story can feel scattered rather than sharp, with dialogue that sometimes sounds like it’s trying too hard to be edgy. If you’re expecting a clean arc, a consistently biting satire, or the full punch of Palahniuk’s novel, this may leave you cold and slightly irritated. Still, Rockwell and Anjelica Huston do real work here, and if you’re patient with an uneven, R-rated oddball that’s more mood and discomfort than payoff, there’s something worth watching.
