Doghouse (2009)

Doghouse is the kind of horror-comedy that commits to its premise with gleeful, blood-splattered confidence: a lads’ weekend spirals into a siege movie where the jokes land because the danger is real and the gore is unapologetically practical and nasty. Jake West keeps the pace snappy and the tone cheerfully anarchic, letting the camaraderie and petty male bravado bounce off genuinely gnarly set pieces in a way that feels like a pub story that somehow turned into a zombie film. The script knows exactly how ridiculous it is, but it’s not lazy about it—there’s a slyness to the banter and a steady escalation into full-on “did they really just go there?” lunacy. If you’re squeamish or tired of crude language, it may be a hard pass, but if you want an entertaining, bonkers twist on the genre that laughs and lunges in the same breath, this one earns its cult reputation.

Doghouse is clearly aiming for a laddish, British pub-comedy spin on a zombie siege, with Jake West trying to mash up gross-out gore, blokey banter, and a simple “mates rally together” arc. The problem is the central joke—women as man-hating monsters—leans so hard into mean-spirited, dated sexism that it can feel less like satire and more like the movie agreeing with its worst characters, which makes the humour and horror both land with a thud. The scares are pretty basic and the filmmaking often looks scrappy rather than intentionally gritty, so if you’re hoping for sharp horror craft or clever comedy, this will likely feel like a waste of your time. If you can tolerate crude attitudes and just want splattery, low-rent chaos with a few energetic performances (Stephen Graham especially), you might get some dumb fun out of it—but it’s a very specific taste.
