The Boys in the Band (2020)

The Boys in the Band is a chamber drama that feels like a pressure cooker: one apartment, one long night, and an ensemble so sharp you can hear the air crackle between lines. Joe Mantello stages Mart Crowley’s dialogue with the rhythm of great theater—funny, cruel, tender, and devastating in the way close friends can be when the masks start slipping—and Jim Parsons, Zachary Quinto, and Matt Bomer anchor it with performances that make every barb and confession land. It’s not a “comfort watch,” and the period-accurate slurs and sexual frankness can be bruising, but that’s part of its honesty: the film confronts how self-protection can curdle into self-harm, and why that history still echoes now. If you’re on the fence, go in expecting something intimate and actor-driven rather than plotty—an intense, beautifully played night at a party you won’t forget.

The Boys in the Band is aiming to bottle a single, combustible night and force you to sit with how love, shame, and cruelty can coexist in a tight-knit group—especially in 1968, when the stakes felt brutal. It’s impressively acted (Parsons and Quinto in particular), but it’s also unapologetically stage-bound: lots of talk, one main location, and escalating rounds of emotional sparring that can start to feel repetitive rather than revelatory. Some of the dialogue and dynamics will read as historically important to some viewers and simply dated or relentlessly acidic to others, with slurs and self-lacerating humor that aren’t softened for modern sensibilities. If you want a more cinematic, outward-looking drama or anything resembling comfort, this will likely feel claustrophobic and punishing; if you can handle a confrontational chamber piece, it has real bite and craft.
