Les Misérables (2019)
Stéphane has recently joined the Anti-Crime Squad in Montfermeil, in the suburbs of Paris, France, where Victor Hugo set his famed novel “Les Miserables”. Alongside his new colleagues Chris and Gwada – both experienced members of the team – he quickly discovers tensions running high between local gangs. When the trio finds themselves overrun during the course of an arrest, a drone captures the encounter, threatening to expose the reality of everyday life.
What people think about Les Misérables
Les Misérables (2019) grabs you by the collar with the kind of lived-in urgency you can’t fake, dropping you into a Paris suburb where every glance feels like a negotiation and every siren sounds like a fuse. Ladj Ly directs with a documentarian’s eye and a thriller-maker’s timing, letting the neighborhood breathe as a vivid, multiethnic ecosystem while the tension tightens scene by scene until it’s almost unbearable. The performances keep it grounded—Damien Bonnard’s newcomer cop becomes our uneasy witness as the film asks what “order” really means when power is exercised like a reflex. It’s tough, loud, and morally bracing rather than comforting, so it may not be for viewers who want escapism—but if you want a film that feels immediate, combustible, and genuinely important, this one hits hard.
Ladj Ly’s Les Misérables is aiming to be a pressure-cooker snapshot of policing, poverty, and simmering resentment in the Paris suburbs, and it absolutely wants you to feel trapped in that heat. At its best, it’s tense, urgent, and sharply observed, with a strong central trio and a finale that lands like a punch. The catch is that the story can feel familiar and a bit clunky on the way there, sometimes prioritizing confrontation and message over quieter humanity, which may leave you feeling preached at rather than immersed. If you’re not in the mood for an abrasive, anxiety-driven drama with harsh violence and very little relief, this one may feel more exhausting than enlightening.
