Assassination of a High School President is a delicious little high-school noir that treats lockers and hall passes like the mean streets, turning an SAT theft into a full-on detective story with a sly grin. It’s shot and paced like a pulp mystery, but it’s powered by teen-comedy bite and a satirical eye for how popularity, ambition, and corruption can look identical under fluorescent hallway lights. Reece Thompson makes Bobby Funke an endearingly scrappy wannabe reporter, while Mischa Barton brings a cool, dangerous allure and Bruce Willis adds deadpan authority that keeps the whole caper grounded. It’s not for everyone—this is an R-rated, edgy, slightly trashy Sundance-era genre riff—but if you like your mysteries clever, your humor sharp, and your nostalgia filtered through a trench-coat lens, it’s an easy watch.

Assassination of a High School President is clearly trying to mash up a noir whodunit with teen satire, with a scrappy student reporter narrating his way through a scandal that’s bigger than it looks. The problem is it often feels like a lighter, less sharp echo of better mystery-comedies, and the “edgy” R-rated bits can come off more like seasoning than substance, leaving the story thinner than it wants to be. Performances are game (and Bruce Willis adds a bit of cranky authority), but the tone can drift into sitcom-ish beats where the stakes and twists don’t land as cleverly as the film thinks they do. If you want a genuinely tight, stylish teen noir, this may disappoint; if you’re okay with a breezy, mildly snarky high-school caper that doesn’t reinvent anything, it’s serviceable.
