Explained

What people think about Bones and All

Bones and All is what happens when a great romantic road movie wanders into the dark and refuses to apologize for what it finds there: it’s tender, lyrical, and strangely beautiful even as it’s deeply unsettling. Luca Guadagnino shoots the American backroads like a haunted postcard, letting the score and cinematography lull you into a dreamy intimacy before the horror snaps you back to the stakes, and the result feels more like a bruised love song than a stunt. Taylor Russell gives Maren a raw, searching vulnerability, Timothée Chalamet brings skittish warmth and damage to Lee, and Mark Rylance is mesmerizingly off-kilter in a way that keeps the air charged whenever he’s near. It’s absolutely not for the squeamish—the violence is graphic and the premise is extreme—but if you can handle the gore, you’ll find a surprisingly heartfelt story about loneliness, desire, and what it costs to be seen.
