Crows Zero (2007)

Crows Zero is the rare high-school brawler that feels mythic without ever losing its sense of fun: Takashi Miike turns teenage turf wars into a swaggering, operatic spectacle where every hallway looks like an arena and every punch lands with personality. It’s loud, kinetic, and surprisingly easy to follow despite the big cast, because the film draws its rival factions with comic-book clarity and builds momentum like a fuse burning toward an inevitable explosion. Shun Oguri gives the would-be “king” a hungry, likable edge, while Miike’s flair keeps the violence brutal but entertaining, punctuated by deadpan humor and bursts of style. If you’re allergic to nonstop fighting or uneasy with a story steeped in delinquent bravado and rougher moments, it may not be your ride—but if you want pure, propulsive action with attitude to spare, this one delivers.

Crows Zero wants to be a loud, swaggering high-school gang opera: all testosterone, loyalty codes, and wall-to-wall brawls, with Miike staging fights like chaotic street ballets. When it’s clicking, the energy is infectious and the cast has real presence, especially if you enjoy watching rival factions collide in escalating set pieces. The problem is it’s overcrowded and stretched out, tossing so many faces and mini-feuds at you that emotional investment can feel optional, and the character depth rarely matches the time spent. If you’re not already on board for stylized delinquent mayhem (and some intense violence), you’ll likely find it repetitive and noisy rather than gripping.
