Fame (2009) earns its title the old-fashioned way: by letting you feel the sweat, nerves, and electric rush of young performers chasing something bigger than applause. Kevin Tancharoen keeps the camera moving like it’s dancing too, giving the film a loose, almost documentary snap that makes rehearsals, hallways, and stage moments feel alive rather than polished to death. The songs and choreography deliver the real payoff—buoyant, hungry, and often genuinely uplifting—while the drama and romance add just enough sting to remind you that ambition can bruise as easily as it can soar. It isn’t for viewers who want a tightly plotted story or the grit of the original, but if you’re on the fence and craving a high-energy celebration of creativity, it’s an easy ticket to punch.

Fame (2009) is clearly trying to bottle that “young artists chasing big dreams” energy, mixing dance numbers, romances, and hard knocks over four years at a performing arts school. The problem is it often feels like a glossy highlight reel: choppy pacing, thin character work, and big issues (including exploitation and a suicide attempt) that get introduced but don’t land with the emotional weight they deserve. If you want the grit, edge, and lived-in intensity people associate with the original, this remake may feel sanitized and oddly shallow. Still, if you’re mainly here for upbeat performances, attractive young talent, and a light, TV-friendly take on showbiz ambition, it can be an easy, undemanding watch.
