Shazam! Fury of the Gods is a superhero sequel that remembers the secret ingredient most capes forget: it’s fun, in the pure, Saturday-matinee sense, where jokes land, emotions sneak up on you, and the whole thing moves with a grin. David F. Sandberg leans into a bright, comic-book fantasy vibe—mythic villains, big city-sized spectacle, and just enough chaos to make the action feel playful rather than punishing—while Zachary Levi and the young cast keep it grounded in an appealing, found-family warmth. It’s at its best when it’s letting the characters bounce off each other and when the film’s heart shows up without asking permission, turning what could’ve been noise into something sincerely charming. If you’re looking for grim realism or airtight logic, this isn’t that movie, but if you want a spirited, crowd-pleasing ride with humor, heart, and a few delightfully goofy surprises, it delivers.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is clearly trying to keep the first film’s scrappy, kid-at-heart charm while leveling up into a bigger fantasy war with gods, monsters, and “save the city” stakes. The problem is that the larger scale comes with a louder, busier, more formulaic feel—lots of action noise and plot machinery that can make the humor and heart feel diluted rather than amplified. The pacing and focus wobble as it juggles too many moving parts, so if you’re hoping for that tight, surprisingly sincere underdog vibe from the original, this may feel like a shinier but less magical repeat. Still, the cast remains likable and there are flashes of playful creativity, so it can work fine if you just want a colorful, undemanding superhero romp and don’t mind the by-the-numbers blockbuster beats.
