Milk is clearly aiming to honor Harvey Milk’s legacy with an accessible, crowd-pleasing biopic that turns activism into a rousing, human story. The problem is that it often plays things a bit safe: the filmmaking is fairly conventional, and the politics and personal messiness can feel smoothed down into a clean inspirational arc rather than something thornier and more complex.
